Tyrone Sherrod: A Coach for the Community
Tyrone Sherrod, a former teacher and basketball coach, always believed in guiding people to reach their full potential—whether on the court or in the classroom. But after retiring from his formal roles, Tyrone felt a deeper calling. Seeing the struggles of underserved communities in Middle River, Maryland, he decided to shift his focus from building athletes to building stronger, healthier lives.
Partnering with The Salvation Army of Middle River and The Maryland Food Bank, Tyrone launched an initiative to provide fresh produce to families in need. Every week, Tyrone and his team could be found unloading trucks of fruits and vegetables, setting up pop-up markets in church parking lots, and delivering boxes directly to homes.
“To me, it’s just like coaching,” Tyrone said, while handing a box of fresh spinach and apples to a grateful family. “It’s about giving people the tools to succeed—this time, it’s their health.”
The initiative has not only provided food but also hope, as Tyrone uses every interaction to encourage families to keep pushing forward. His unwavering dedication has turned him into a local hero, proving that leadership isn’t confined to a classroom or a basketball court.
Tyrone’s work continues to inspire, reminding everyone that true success comes from lifting others. For him, the game never ends—it just evolves.
